Best Supporting Actress: 1930s

I almost skipped the 1930s because I have not seen very many supporting performances of note. It was tough to come up with winners from what little I've seen. Of course, I'll come back and edit these once I see more performances from this decade.

1930: Marie Dressler, Anna Christie

1931: Miriam Hopkins, The Smiling Lieutenant

1932: Joan Crawford, Grand Hotel

1933: Jean Harlow, Dinner at Eight

1934: Florelle, Les Misérables

1935: Olivia de Havilland, Captain Blood

1936: Bonita Granville, These Three
Oscar winner: Gale Sondergaard, Anthony Adverse
Was she nominated?: Yes

1937: May Whitty, Night Must Fall
Oscar winner: Alice Brady, In Old Chicago
Was she nominated?: Yes

1938: Fay Bainter, Jezebel
Oscar winner: Fay Bainter, Jezebel

1939: Jean Arthur, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Oscar winner: Hattie McDaniel, Gone with the Wind
Was she nominated?: No

Note: 1936 was the first year of this category at the Oscars.

  1. Love this and the Jean Arthur mention. She actually wins my LEAD award that year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Vivian Leigh, blah, blah, blah. She was wonderful, but Arthur is just on another level with a much lighter character even.

    1. It's tough call, but I'd nominate Arthur for lead in Only Angels Have Wings and give her the supporting win here. She seems more of a lead in Wings than in Mr. Smith. Either way, they're both great performances.
